Overview

The Institute for Nanolectronics Discovery and Exploration (INDEX) center is led by the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) at the University of Albany in New York, and partners with leading university researchers from Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Harvard University, New York University, Notre Dame, Purdue University, and University of Virginia.

INDEX focuses on a broad range of phenomena for logic devices, organized around two main device thrusts. They are spin and graphene p-n junction logic devices. For both device concepts, there is a strong emphasis on fabrication and characterization, including the development of nanomaterial systems; atomic-scale fabrication technologies; predictive modeling protocols for devices, subsystems and systems; power dissipation management designs, and realistic architectural integration schemes for realizing novel spin and graphene devices.

In addition to NRI funding, public and private funding supports the project, with New York State committing matching funds to help INDEX establish the scientific, technical and manufacturing infrastructure, as well as train the educated work force necessary to allow New York to compete globally in the field of nanotechnology. INDEX leverages the facilities at CNSE, and additional support is also provided by IBM, the federal government, semiconductor equipment manufacturers and semiconductor material suppliers.

Research Focus

Research projects in the INDEX center are broken down into these themes:

  • Steep Sub-threshold (SS) Slope Graphene p-n Junction (GPNJ) Devices
  • All Spin Logic (ASL) and Charge-Coupled Spin Logic (CSL)
  • CNSE's 300mm Fab Integration
